Poisonous

from Self-Titled by j. De Hoyos

lyrics

There goes the neighborhood
but not in the way you’d say it would
expectations circumvented and mended the world into a different mold
it’s so brave and it’s so new but now it’s gone, what could we do
can’t even enjoy the cold brew without being reminded of you

20. DAMN. YEARS.
I see them moving mountains but tell who they’re moving them for?
I see them moving mountains but who are they moving them for?
Because they told me it’s too tough to keep the lights on in this store

Pointing fingers like arrows, Oliver Queen tell em quickly
empty out the quiver like YOU HAVE FAILED THIS CITY
.but this isn’t a comic book, they hold no empathy or pity
They ignite the world and burn and smoak like fel-i-city, sell this city

sell me real estate in a town that’s awesome
put a blind eye to every single other problem
what’s the problem?
I see them moving mountains, but why?
walking upon that earth was the closest we could get to the sky
but they don’t want us here, and certainly not with our senses high
they want us a little to the right, cue the movement to gentrify
I see them moving mountains, can someone tell me how? Tell me now!
because they claim they don’t have the strength to fight the evil killing this town.
foggy like nelson, enveloped in a mist in which we drown
Upper class settlers tell the rest of us to settle down
and citizens attest to the issues that need some attention
but unfortunately we’ve learned that they don’t heed our suggestions

and why’d you have to bring your projects here
it’s so poisonous
and why do you never heed our fears
about the poison
and why’d you have to plant your promise here
it’s so poisonous
and why can you not see you have poisoned us?

replaced one vice with another, vaporizers undercover
claiming to be the pinnacle of health and subtle comfort
marketing to kids just like tobacco did with cigs
vape and smoke and drink but you still can’t handle cannabis
and call me old fashioned, but i’ve grown sick of hashtags
and kids who think glasses represent nerds and passion
and the pedantic scholar's medium's
google and wikipedia
creativity left the media
replaced what they are feeding us
with simple tiny pills so you don't choke up when you swallow
but they're sugar filled placebos, a fancy package that is hollow
you can down entire bottle but I promise it's all borrowed
I think it's time we put your mind into making a better tomorrow
because these icons are riding on the coattails of greatness past
but the clock tick tocks to countdown just how long the fakeness lasts
they pick and choose the image used
to boost their movement, make improvements
dress you up and dress you down
suppress your gut and send you out
and the passion for fashion needs a significant alteration
irrational stature corrupts the current situation.
See, clothes will make you a thug
when it's matters of race
all you've achieved is erased, while stereotypes replace
and clothes will make you a slut
when it's matters of rape,
make the rapist a plaintiff after the real victim's blamed
the world will give you a hug when it flatters their face
then pull the plug with no shame once you negate their taste
Harvey Dent hardly spent a single cent to make it change
So it’s really up to you to take their two-faces and rearrange
their perspective on the message that they’re sending to all the kids
convincing ‘em that how it should be is the way it already is
poisoning the well
there’s poison in the well
oh well, whose fault is it, i guess they’ll never tell
no accountability for the detrimental health
penalizing the citizens who refuse to buy what they sell
come one, come all, come well, welcome to hell
where we are far more concerned that you’re willing to kiss and tell
and who you kiss brings more concern than the secrets that you won’t tell
Where they can poison your community, but you can’t care for yourself.

and why’d you have to bring your projects here
it’s so poisonous
and why do you never heed our fears
about the poison
and why’d you have to plant your promise here
it’s so poisonous
and why can you not see you have poisoned us?

and why can you not see we don’t want you here
and why can you not see we don’t want you here
and why can you not say what we want to hear
and why can you not see we don’t want you here
